Would anyone be interested in a play-by-forum-post campaign-level wargame set for Dun Kells?
We would use a heavily house-ruled variant of "Risk" to pit the six main kingdoms set around the fay region of Dun Kells against one another.
As the referee, I would be rolling for possible random invasions of Vikings (North), Barbarians (East), Saracens (South) and "Atlantans" (West).
These are the six kingdoms:
1. Logres (fantastical, Holy England) 2. Germania 3. Slavia (Holy Rus) 4. Byzantia 5. Gallica 6. Iberica (Holy Barcelona)
I would roll up monarchs for each of these as the "playing characters" you would give order through, etc.
Dun Kells would be an intractable region (like the oceans on a Risk board) that could prove tactically significant if conquered. Only a hex crawl of lower level character can provide that. But that is another campaign!

Sounds interesting! What is the posting frequency? I've never played in a play by forum style game so I don't know anything about it...

Well, as it is a "Risk" game that I have "Diplomacy"-i-fied, it should really work well as a PbP.
Basically each game "season" you all would issue me your orders -- probably by PM -- at least the parts you want to keep secret.
I would work out the resolution of orders on a board at home, and with NPC reaction rolls where applicable.
I would then describe by post the publicly knowable outcomes of the conflicts, announce alliances kept and broken, and any other public knowledge. Basically "campaign news."
Private knowledge I would convey by PM.
We could keep it pretty simple. I would say as long as folks checked in most days, with, say one or two designated "break" days per week, the campaign should move along nicely.

That sounds really cool and I look forward to it being a "thing" here!

Cool idea! As a teenager I actually made a big map of a fantasy world of my own, and together with a friend of mine we expanded the Risk-rules and used that map to play some sort of fantasy Risk! I don't remember much about it, apart from having a blast with it.

RISK remains an old favorite of mine. Using it in this manner sounds like a lot of fun. It may take some digging but I have a copy of the old SPACE GAMER magazine with the rules for Hyborean Risk.

Hyborean RISK? Are you kidding. Wow. Game-changer. You know, you should set up a PbP with those rules down in the Tony Bath folder! If you do, I'm in!

I have always loved Risk, it is a fun game. We played it in college with six players, then added a bunch of islands in the Pacific Ocean on a poster board and added connections (one to Japan, one to Asia, two to Australia, one to South America and one to North America). If you have ever played you can imagine how that blows every playing strategy out of the water. I would love to see those rules for rules for Hyborean Risk, and Necromancer map or re-creation. I wish I could, but I cannot commit to a pbp game myself right now.

I've never participated in a PbP game, but lately I've become rather attracted to the thought of it. A couple of factors have held me back though. Mainly the lack of PbP experience and knowledge of rules and procedures - I wouldn't like to make a fool of myself or ruin the experience for other participants. Then it's the infamous aspect of time - as boring as it may sound I have very little spare time left. But it still sounds like a cool idea...

Remember that one of the principles of OD&D is that the player really doesn't need to know any rules at all! A good referee always helps out with any knowledge that the player really does need. No one around here is a fool. Everybody gets to make mistakes. And no one is going to be shamed for that! (Not if I'm a "moderator" ) The very fact that play is slowed down a bit and only requires, say, a once a day check-in for about 5 minutes means that it is one of the greatest ways to stay in a game without having to sit around at a table for 5 hours! Finally, all I can say is, "aw, come on! Give it a try!"

But under these circumstances, well, I might even give it a try then...

I must say, one thing that I really appreciate here on this board (as well as the ODD74 board) is how incredibly friendly and supportive you guys are. Most other boards and communities I've visited don't come close.

I'm working up a map. It is not going to be pretty. Think "London Underground Schematic!" But that will help us with play. Add your own imagination! Necromancer, can I count you in as the fourth? Then I would only be waiting for two more!
