What does a medieval ski lodge look like?
Is it a modern ski lodge reskinned?
Or does it somehow work in-world?
Why would people go to a snowy mountainous place apart from if they had to survive?
Pilgrimage to a holy site of some kind at the top, and then skiing down is the way to return?

Thee reason peeps go there is that it is very near a dungeon the lodge built up as a R&R site for delvers.

So it's like a pond stocked with fish? I don't follow. I meant this dungeon is prepared for delvers to relax and enjoy themselves in...like by doing regular dungeon stuff, killing monsters?

No I ment that the lodge was for r&r but your idea is better Okay, so thanks to my misunderstanding, we now have two related for the lodge: - The lodge is there as a "service center" for the R&R of adventurers who try their hand at some kind of nearby dungeon, I imagine a completely insane mega-dungeon
- The lodge owners created a local dungeon and somehow "maintain" it as a training ground for adventurers who can then relax and also spend their gold at the lodge
Both these ideas seem to me really rich in possibilities, a kind of controlled gonzo atmosphere.
For the first idea, if you wanted to prep, you could have some really insane smorgasbord of decorations and trinkets and trophies at the lodge, because who knows what's going to come out of a megadungeon. It could give the place a kind of Nethack feel like when you meet the ghosts of other characters that have played and died before you.
For the second idea, which I do like despite it being my mistake, a bunch of questions come up:
- How is the dungeon kept going without being a money pit?
- What is the flavor of the lodge?
- Do the owners have any control over deadliness? What do adventurers hear about it that makes them want to come here? Is this a tourist trap or what?

Let me start over on this. Ok the basic idea is a very small town that is built around the ski lode, It has super high level retired adventures that run the place in their retirement. It's true purpose is to support expeditions to the near by mega dungeon. Twin peaks as if Rod Serling had written it

I will think on it and hope you will post again soon.

It's true purpose is to support expeditions to the near by mega dungeon. Twin peaks as if Rod Serling had written it So it's like a front for the purpose of supporting expeditions? Different rubes come to ski and get fleeced in the game room and their gold gets turned into equipment for the next generation of adventurers to keep plugging away at the megadungeon. Or: the adventurers and the client are the same people, there to extract as much value as they can from this megadungeon and also hit the slopes between one delve and the next. *** I have trouble translating the ski lodge into medieval fantasy. Are we imagining a kind of "inn" placed here conveniently, roast duck and ale, plus you can rent snowshoes

At some point late in a dungeon expedition, PCs can get seriously disoriented and make their way crawlingly toward what they think is an exit not far from where they entered, only to find themselves blinking in the light as, bloodied and exhausted, they exit the ground from a maintenance trap door at the top of the green circle slope. Skiers look at them in surprise and disgust.

hengest and mao , I meant, I was not sure if this was for the fanzine or just a collaboration in general. Of course the Admin can make a private area here for you if you want and it is not fanzine related.

The mao imagination is starting to become a little clearer to me but I'm not sure I can keep up. Maybe a fanzine article, maybe not. Let's see.

For the second idea, which I do like despite it being my mistake, a bunch of questions come up:
- How is the dungeon kept going without being a money pit?
- What is the flavor of the lodge?
- Do the owners have any control over deadliness? What do adventurers hear about it that makes them want to come here? Is this a tourist trap or what?
hengest I'm going to chime in here if you don't mind. 1. A small party found this dungeon and barely made it out alive, having their heads handed to them; however, they did get away with some valuable gems and decided making money off other adventurers is the better part of valor. One of them having some family merchant contacts leveraged their coin into a favorable contract and they are running a jumping off point for dungeon adventurers and providing R&R service for survivors as well as medical services having imported a temple and a couple of clerics with a half dozen novices. The combination has made the potion and healing business along with food, equipment and other services big business indeed. 2. When arriving there is an entry that leads to a very macho, aggressive get down in that dungeon atmosphere, which talks up the fabulous treasures found there. Survivors go to a different area, designed to help them get healed up and and boost there morale and get them ready to give it another shot. All areas are designed to fleece them of their money, although credit is also extended "as a favor." At just a small fee and interest charge of course. 3. Owners have no control over deadliness at all, but as part of their business they have accumulated quite a stock of magic along with coin. They also have quite a lot of the combined maps from survivors and sell partial maps to new adventurers at a "big discount" provided there is an agreement to share any new map information when they make it back. The owners pay bards to go out and talk this place up and they have enough information to know this place is huge. Now and then when as area has been softened up a bit by some barely survivors they have some bully boys that they use to go in themselves when things are quiet for a time and they pick their spots. Yes, a tourist trap of sorts, but so much more. Also, kept very quiet, is the fact that some sorely wounded survivors don't get the healing and treatment they are expecting and they sadly pass away. While some of the coin they bring back is sent to family, the magic is hoarded. The five owners are at this point extremely well equipped magic wise when they go delving from time to time when their greed gets the best of them.

Let me start over on this. Ok the basic idea is a very small town that is built around the ski lode, It has super high level retired adventures that run the place in their retirement. It's true purpose is to support expeditions to the near by mega dungeon. Twin peaks as if Rod Serling had written it There's a substance, valuable, in mines that shift around and are accessible only through the megadungeon. But mining also "stirs the pot" and shakes open portals through which things come, restocking the dungeon. PCs or miners (or mining PCs) could easily stumble through a portal down there that might take them to a terrible place, a good place, another plane. Overall the general feeling is on the gonzo side, but with the elements basically justified: the ski lodge is there to milk the adventurers for money, the dungeons are worth exploring to get at the mines (more money), whatever weirdness comes into the dungeons comes through a portal. The whole underground area is like a swiss cheese of mines and portals, barely topped off by this ski lodge place, which has been there long enough to have its own history. The high level retired adventurers are semi-informed about the portals.
