Welcome! We can always use an engaged new member. I look forward to hearing more of your gaming History. Welcome to The Ruins @akatonbo , you've come to the right place, everyone has a chance to be vital here! . . . although I'm sorta wondering if the vital stats of the two pbps I'm in have gone to Code Blue.

. . . although I'm sorta wondering if the vital stats of the two pbps I'm in have gone to Code Blue. I do check in, but Mighty Darci & mormonyoyoman are either indisposed or busy. I am not sure of the Traveller PbP, but I might put mine on hiatus until everyone can post at least twice a week; as I can do so, that said I need the players to move the action otherwise I am narrating a piece of fiction. Both raikenclw & The Perilous Dreamer are the frequent posters. I might end up launching a second fantasy PbP if there is any others players willing to post at least twice a week & resume my original Ruins of Dorgand pbp once Mighty can post more often. @akatonbo welcome, hopefully we can rebuild the vitality of this forum. My posts will hopefully be slowly becoming more frequent in the near future. Me and joetexas* have recently checked in with the Traveller game, as has Mighty Darci. I think we're at the point in both games where the players are awaiting the start of a new scene by the DM/Referee. The fantasy game needs to run into the Bad Guys (either above or below ground, possibly both if in separate threads), while the Traveller game needs to jump to the next destination (unless there is to be an encounter on the way to the jump point). As best as I can recall, both Might Darci and mormonyoyoman stated that they expected the GM to move the game forward as best he saw fit. [*I hope I got his handle correct!]

Not sure about the Traveller game, but lets be honest here I am not supposed to be narrating a story but refereeing a game. I've posted info needed to move forward but it seems to be ignored by the players @raikenclaw. Players can act on the stuff I posted but as I said have yet to really do so. Initially it was TPD introducing his PCs & you guys allowing to join you, which is fine, but things are posted clearly including a map image with notifications so you can work from there & I have info to post based on that.
Remember your goal was to seek shelter for the night & then head back to the ruins to begin your delve, after a brief exploration of the cellar. Since you & TPD are the active members of the group it should you taking the lead since Chet is indisposed & Mighty is infrequent at best. If need I can narrate things until you get to the ruins but I don't want to hear complaints over it, just let me know.

I confess to not understanding. I don' think I'm alone. Sure, I could say, "My PCs spend the night peacefully, awake the next morning and join everyone else as we hoof it to the ruins and start down."
But then . . .
Only the GM knows if we actually spend a restful night or get attacked.
Only the GM knows if there are further hidden tunnels beyond the cellar, which could be used to attack us within our "safe" camp.
Only the GM knows if those mysterious runes in the stable where we are all taking shelter will activate and summon a Bad Thing.
While the GM may think that he's cleared the way for us, we (or at least I) did not get that impression at all.

Calling all to the discussion: except Chet I know he is not able to join us due to many IRL things not the least of which is his health and the passing of his mother. The Perilous Dreamer, raikenclw, Mighty Darci amd Hexenritter Verlag. This is a better place for this dicussion, than in the Introduction thread please.

I think there is a misunderstanding here. Right now in Hexenritter Verlag game, we need raikenclw to chime in, in both active threads. At least that is where I think we are at.

Yeah, thanks! Without this thread, I would probably still be blissfully unaware of the new threads. Over the previous months, I had taken the lazy route of logging in just long enough to check the "Participated" tab . . . which of course told me nothing actually useful. Ah, well. Water under the bridge, now.

Sure, I could say, "My PCs spend the night peacefully, awake the next morning and join everyone else as we hoof it to the ruins and start down." But then . . . Only the GM knows if we actually spend a restful night or get attacked. Darkness swallows the Raven wood, yet moonlight filters down into the man made glade where the hunting lodge is located. The people on watch above see movement occasionally in the trees and a few familiar forms move toward the lodge's gate but their spines stand up as they close with the gates, letting out whimpers and them low growls as they get close. After several minutes they wander back into the woods and are not seen again. After a long night the sun creeps above the trees pushing away the darkness, though the early spring cold lingers.
What shall you all do this morning?

Only the GM knows if there are further hidden tunnels beyond the cellar, which could be used to attack us within our "safe" camp. Chet Posted: Trask: (grump, grump, grump) "If that's how everyone wants doing." (sighs and looks at secret door area) "I does not like leaving mysteries to themself." But the other players chose to set up watches & sleep for the night instead of replying to Chet's post. Then Chet's health, Darci's schedule & my computer & mom's health issues delayed things, thus the state we are in.
Only the GM knows if those mysterious runes in the stable where we are all taking shelter will activate and summon a Bad Thing. Clearly this did not occur as I pointed out they are Mulvigg protective ruins, which if I remember Sora commented on. While the GM may think that he's cleared the way for us, we (or at least I) did not get that impression at all. Someone needs to check the threads I think. I was asked to create the threads & did so.

As I explained elsewhere, I had gotten lazy and was only clicking on the "Participated" tab, rather than checking the actual game board.
Although a short, clear note such as "New threads now open" to the OOC thread would have been very helpful . . .

I guess on this board atm there just might not be interest, anyway.

There seem to be a TON of lurkers, but not many folk interested in playing in a PbP. I long ago resigned myself to this being pretty much the permanent state of affairs. PbP players are - in essense - frustrated authors. Those which are any good, anyway. And if they're good authors, then they usually find something else to do with this talent that will actually make them a real income.

I'm NOT a frustrated author, but I know that what you say is pretty true in general. I'd do it just for a crack at running something, learning, etc. But I just don't think I'm there yet, even if I had a handful of "for sure" players lined up on here. I might give it a shot with a friend or something...and try running things "campaign-style" (people in different places, shared world) for a while and see how it develops. But let's not kid ourselves, it's all I can do to post some of my notes on here at the moment. Even playing in a PbP would be a little much for. My posts can be bad and no one cares, but if my game posts were boring everyone, that would be too bad.

The permanent state of affairs on the Internet, or here? On the Internet. I've played in and/or run PbP games on at least four other sites, over the past two decades. It was the same on every one of them. I'm NOT a frustrated author, but I know that what you say is pretty true in general. Well, there's frustrated and then there's frustrated. Some PbP players/GMs are consciously trying to become successful authors. Others only write for their own pleasure or at least that's what they tell themselves. I'm in the latter camp. I've only ever had one article published, in a gaming magazine that died quietly several years ago now. Although it [my article] did get a couple of positive reviews. I'd do it just for a crack at running something, learning, etc. But I just don't think I'm there yet, even if I had a handful of "for sure" players lined up on here. I might give it a shot with a friend or something...and try running things "campaign-style" (people in different places, shared world) for a while and see how it develops. My posts can be bad and no one cares, but if my game posts were boring everyone, that would be too bad. Have you ever read "The No-Prep Gamemaster?" www.drivethrurpg.com/product/286653/The-NoPrep-GamemasterThis guy gives some *very* good advice for new GMs. I agree with him, especially when he advises that you're better off NOT preparing very much beforehand. Unlike writing a book, running a game *should* involve allowing your players as much input into the process as possible. So if a GM prepares too much in advance, he will be that much less likely to allow significant player input, because doing so would make much of his already-expended labor pointless.

raikenclw Nope, haven't read that, but should. By "not a frustrated author" I didn't mean that I'm a successful author, just that I'm not an author at all. If I had dreams of writing and making even $50 on it, they're buried so far down I can't even see them. But yeah, I was a regular on a PbP for a few months a few years back. Seemed people were pretty reliable, then the ref quit. He was nice about it, but sudden. I was kinda down about it. Oh well

just that I'm not an author at all. That's why I put in "writing for their own pleasure." That's pretty much me, despite my one article. I only have that one to my credit because one of the founders of that short-lived magazine was desperate for content, so I wrote up a setting idea as an article for him. For legal purposes, I was paid exactly one [1] Canadian dollar for my work, which dollar was sent to me through the mail in the form of a coin. I suppose I still have it . . . somewhere. But yeah, I was a regular on a PbP for a few months a few years back. Seemed people were pretty reliable, then the ref quit. He was nice about it, but sudden. I was kinda down about it. Oh well Yeah. PbP can be a real roller-coaster. The game I was in for the longest time - and the one I really liked best - was also the one I chose to voluntarily leave, because conflict between myself and another player was ruining the fun for everyone [and I knew HE wasn't going to either stop poking me or leave himself].

Well, point taken. Although I still don't consider myself even an author since I don't even write for my own pleasure. I'm making an exception on my sub because...well, I HAVE to write or else I can't communicate these things, right? But I suppose now we are splitting hairs. Or I am.

Ya know...I wonder...has anyone used a Discord server or other chat thingy to take advantage of how connected people are these days? There could be combat days and planning, travel days, etc... raikenclw I've started to use Discord to play in a couple of different games. But I had to bow out of both, because I just couldn't fit myself into the schedules of the other participants. It's hard for me to get reliably good sleep, so I frequently have days/nights where my brain just isn't up to being social and/or creative.

UPDATE: I've run several sessions of a game over Roll20 and participated as a player in several sessions of someone else's game through the same site. Everything went fairly smoothly, with the qualification that one player couldn't figure out how to let Roll20 access his computer and another's voice connection dropped out at least once per session. In both those cases, I'm confident those players' connection abilities/devices were at fault, not the Roll20 site itself. But then my health tanked [turns out I have a congested heart] and I now have continuing issues with fatigue as well as talking very much at one time. Gaming via text is much easier on me, so long as my carpal tunnel remains quiescent.
