This poll contains a list of miscellaneous equipment, please vote for the 5 items that you think are the most useful and tell us several things that you could use each item for. If you think of anything that is not on this list please post it and tell us what you would use it for.

I suppose I'm just simple!! I chose rope, spikes and oil for the obvious utility they present.
Usually, for me, brainstorms regarding miscellaneous equipment typically arise in a specific game for a specific situation, that aren't common enough to Merritt a permanent addition to a basic equipment list (as I track encencumbrance).
However, a spare flask of water is useful in detecting pit traps or concealed doors in the floor. Just pour in the area, and see if the water flows down into the cracks that reveal its position!
Caltrops are also pretty useful to help in evasion or sometimes in ambush. One of my players suggested simple bent nails for the same usage.
Sacks of flour are great for helping to find pesky invisible foes.
Bags of salt are great for giant snails!
Other than that, mapping is of dire importance so quill pens and parchment are pretty key.
Grappling hooks for the rope increases utility. That boat on the wrong side of the underground river? Give a toss, and pull it in!
My gear is usually typical stuff, though... except for those previously mentioned times where something specific is beneficial. Just my 2 cp.
...Oh, and I can't remember where I read this, but evidently in one of the TSR editions of the rules, is a somewhat little-known bit of guidance as to why one benefits from purchasing Belladonna. Evidently, consuming it after exposure to lycanthropy, it allows a straight 25% to nullify the disease entirely and failing that, at least offers an immediate second saving throw to shake of the results. I sure wish I could remember where I read this, as for years I had no idea why it was on the equipment lists!

A small tortoise??? Tell me about that. I don't remember where I got that or the context other than it was in someones equipment list. I will have to mull on that to see if I can remember. Anyone else?

'50 of rope - climbing or descending in a dungeon, typing up an enemy & securing an item.
Chalk - marking traps & directions underground. Crushing it up & blowing it into the eyes of an enemy temporarily blinding them.
Silver Mirror - to look around corners or a crack in a door & a last ditch attempt to escape a Lycantheope by jamming it into its throat & hope it doesn't bite me as I do so.
Flask of oil - to help create new torches, throw at injured Trolls or other fire fearing beastie.
Full Waterskin - to help find trapped floors, give water to thirsty captives we've freed or mixe with ground chalk or ash/dirt to cover my flesh to help with camouflage.

I also favor an ink, quill, and at least ten sheet of parchment paper as a miscellaneous equipment item.

I would have to say: knife, either flint & steel or matches (usually both), full water skin, rope (up to 50'), and a light source (lantern, torch, candle in that order).
To me the shear utility of a knife (even a flint one) exempts it from the weapon category. Certain types of ancient water containers (google says copper) would be useful because they inhibit or kill bacterial growth.

Thank you PD! Oddly enough I choose miscellaneous equipment after dying (many times) for lack of (when I thought about it) simple things in T&T solos. Looking at my list again I see I forgot footwear. Hmm...

Looks like I was the first to vote for the glass jar. Good to scoop up all kinds of liquids in to figure out what they are.

A bundle of twigs wrapped in a piece of leather or animal hide is really good. You never know when you are going to need something dry to start a fire with. Also a pencil is really handy and lasts longer than chalk and harder for others to see when you need to mark something.

Interesting poll and results. I would like to know what you use a small tortoise for though.
