Although shrouded in mysterious origins, these turnips have not been around for very long. They are extremely important.
The best guess of what they are is dimensional anchors that somehow mutated to sentience. During the crash of the many dimensions 30 years ago they were apparently placed in crumbling dimensions and stabilized them. As this process was started very late, the planes they are stabilizing are very small, often only a few acres.
The Turnips themselves are extremely LG and proactive in fighting the Cthuhlu Mythos.. Their offence is limited to self trained wizards that can cast spells so that they can see and hear, as these are not characteristic of these sentient vegetables. most of them merely think and ponder able to communicate w each other through their roots. They take every opportunity to reproduce and cultivate themselves.
Note: I really honestly used these. They were inspired by sentient turnips at a gaming convention I went to. I heard about them , thought they were stupid and finally I became a "believer"

As the number of turnips grows, does the size of the dimension also grow?

As the number of turnips grows, does the size of the dimension also grow? never thought of that. Maybe.

Wow, you can get advice and then you can eat them! I have a lot of mixed feeling concerning the idea that peeps might eat them. I suppose if I had to pick, I would say that being eaten is a normal part of their life cycle. Note: I run them as no advantage to eating them, but I can see an argument that eating them provides a boost to Int. Not how I would do it but I can see this becoming campaign defining.

Tell us more about the crash of dimensions 30 years ago, maybe billions of Turnip Philosopher-Kings died of a blight or were eaten and that caused the crash. Maybe they have been around a long, long time. Maybe there was originally only one dimension and they were used to expand the number of dimensions and that is what led to them being sentient.

This is bucking up against my "follow any request" policy. So I am going to think what I can add within canon and get back to this in the next day or 2.

never thought of that. Maybe. I like the idea more as I think about it. I do too but I have to stay w canon on that part, so all they do is stabilize what ever is left. EURIKA! I'll do two versions, one here that goes w canon and another one in the homebrew critters section. Gimme a couple of days

30 years ago the gods were defeated by the Cthulhu Mythos. At the same time Planer Parasites destroyed and reduced all of the planes. The Vivvar or Life Plane managed to successfully save itself. As the Vivvar was capable of reproduction it created these turnips to stabilize the universe. Many fragmented planes were saved by he dimentional anchors that would come to be know as The Turnip Philosopher-Kings. They probably were raised to sentience accidentally by the Life plane as Vivvar was not capable of fine manipulation. they were targeted by the Mythos but as they were not very high profile, they thrived.
These vegetables are experiencing reality at a very high speed and as such live a "normal" life span if eaten when ripe. The Philosopher -Kings ponder on the various realities and delve deep into theories of the Universe. 3 Turnip Wizards were at the final (?) battle vrs Cthulhu, and contributed much to the fight.

I was just making a joke, I was not seriously thinking of eating a sentient.
