I proposed to my players an adventure of arctic theme for the approach of the holidays. This Xmas time adventure went very well. They all had a lot of fun, and even those who were not convinced of the goodness of the Old School, appreciated it.
This is the adventure, the players are called by the northern tribes to go and explore a majestic wall of ice, from which they say the demons are coming out. I was inspired by "Frozen in time" from DCC.
So it's how I set up the table and how I showed the pc, only showing the portraits. The characters were: a human cleric, a human magic-user and two human fighting-men. The map is the setting, essentially, invented by me, created two hours before playing. The population was inspired by the Vikings, the Siberians, the Mongols, the Inuits and the Teutonic order. They had all their representation and the players immediately grasped the tensions and peculiarities of the peoples in the pre-dungeon moment. They had to make a choice: choose a totem of a great tribe on the River of the Spirits, the sacred place where the tribes were gathered to talk and solve the problem of ice demons. They made the simplest choice, accepting the corruption of a Koriak merchant who gave him potions and a magical green bone that could tame wild beasts. I'm happy that the players avoided almost all the fights with ingeniousness, cunning and use of their resources in an intelligent way (the magic-user has used phantasmal force with the illusion of the sky that falls on the head of the uluti, to be worshiped as a deity by those savages, the cleric threw the magic bone to the saber-toothed bear, the guardian robot was enslaved, expressing a desire by a magic lamp just stolen from a force field. Into the stasis field was a tyrannosaur, and a grenade was launched in the area, so that it would explode when the stasis field would fail, seriously injuring the dinosaur. A wounded yeti was first healed with magic, has been made friendly, then while playing with the grenades as if they were balls, the pc sent him towards the same stasis field of the t-rex to get rid of it and remained nailed there.
All players were very good and inspired, they slowly discovered they were in a hyper-technological environment and they appreciated all the quotes and the gonzo style of adventure. No one died, even though the magician remained at two hp because a circular saw of the robot!
