I am going to print out my Greyhawk Folio PDF and Dragon articles I plan to use IF I end up running a Greyhawk campaign in the future. I'll use the Oerik map in the folio as the guide for expanding the setting adding homebrew elements to my campaign. The only non-GH Folio/Gygax Deity articles I'll use is the Olman & Touv info from the Scarlet Brotherhood sourcebook, but even that will be just a resource to mine from. The Deities I'll be initially including will be Heironeous (Lesser God), Hextor (Lesser God), Iuz (Demi-God), St. Cuthbert (Lesser God), Celestian (Lesser God), Fharlanghn (Lesser God), Ehlonna (Lesser Goddess), Pholzus (Lesser God), Tritheron (Lesser God), Istus (Major Goddess), Obad-Hai (Lesser God), Boccob (Major God), Zagyg (Demi-God), Olidammara (Lesser God), Erythnul (Lesser God), Incabulos (Major God), Nerull (Major God), Ralihaz (Lesser God) & Wastri (Demi-God). I am iffy about including the Quasi-Deities from issue #71 of Dragon as they were not included with Gary's main 'Deities & Demi-Gods of the World of Greyhawk' series of articles and tied to a module where they were referenced but since I am only using the Greyhawk Folio & 'Deities & Demi-Gods of the World of Greyhawk' they will likely not play a part in my version of the setting.

Right now I'm working through the deities that I'm using. The same small list that you have going here's how some of it looks so far. ACKS has the Players companion which introduces the Paladin to the game. To add flavor without complications I've used the concept of templates that's inherit in ACKS. The templates in ACKS is just a character class with a starting set of proficiencies (sort of skills but as fiddly and honestly could be jettisoned from the system to make it more B/X like) and usually a "new name" for the class and starting equipment for flavor. So the faith requirements are the proficiencies you must pick at start if you play a cleric or paladin of the god/goddess. Not all the deities have paladins in my greyhawk. Proficiencies as defined by the core book --" Proficiencies represent particular areas of expertise that your character has developed due to his background, homeland, and training." The list itself is small and gives players that want that extra customization a bit to fiddle with and those that don't really don't have to bother. Anyway below is a sample of what I'm doing. I'll also be customizing spell lists for the divine classes. The name of the template with the base calss name in parenthesis. I'm not going to make too many spell lists some will have similar spells so the separate lists will be small. As for the setting itself I'll focus on the central flaness and give the world a dark age of antiquity feel with the recently collapsed great kingdom as my fallen roman empire. Now my group gamed here extensively back in the 90's but unfortunately I didn't take good notes so I will incorporate what I remember to this version. Major npc's such as the circle of eight, etc.. I will probably just drop from the setting. If it's not in the folio I won't use it. Also as the ACKS spell list doesn't go over level six nor have the named spells it will be easier. Deity | Alignment | Domain | Faith Requirements | Divine Classes | Rao | Lawful | Peace, Reason and Serenity | Priest — Divine Blessing,Theology;
Lightbringer — Righteous Turning, Leadership | Priest (Cleric),
(Lightbringer) Priestess | Heironious | Lawful | Chivalry, Honor, valor | Crusader - Martial Training (swords/daggers),Riding;
Champion -Divine Blessing,Theology | Crusader (Cleric),
Champion (Paladin) | St Cuthbert | Lawful | common sense, wisdom, zeal,
honesty, truth, and discipline | Exorcist — Sensing Evil, Intimidation Inquisitor — Illusion Resistance,Profession (judge) | Exorcist (Cleric),
Inquisitor (Paladin) | Istus | Neutral | Fate,Destiny | Prophet - Prophecy, Performance (storytelling), Oracle Dancer - Theology,Prophecy; Oracle —Prophecy, Performance (story telling. | Prophet (Cleric),
Oracle (Priestess),
Oracle Dancer (BladeDancer) |
Here's what an example template looks like with starting proficiency and starting equipment for a fighter. Flavor and customization without much complication: Name:Corsair Proficiencies:Swashbuckling ,Seafaring Equipment: Shortbow, quiver with 20 arrows, scimitar, 2 well-balanced daggers with boot-sheathes, leather armor, colorful tunic and pants, silk girdle, high boots, wineskin with good wine, small sack, 50' rope, grappling hook, 1 week’s iron rations, 7gp

Right now I'm still deciding how I want to do but here's what I've got so far. Using the ACKS domain system I had to adjust the population numbers for Greyhawk city to fit. As the population in the folio is loose with numbers I rounded up to a total of 100,000 total population in the city and surrounding area. Here are the game "stats" for the city:
Greyhawk, City of
Domain Population: 10,000 urban families (Greyhawk City proper); 10,000 peasant families divided among out lying villages and towns; Domain Alignment: Neutral; Domain Ruler: XXXXXXX, Thief 10, N; Domain Income: 54,506 gp; Stronghold Value: 750,000 gp; Settlement Investment Value: 625,000 gp; Market Class: II;Trade Routes: Hardby; Vassals:
*REWORKED BELOW*
Still some filling out to do.
For those not familiar or don't own the ACKS rules the domain population assumes 5 members per family so with the Urban population and "peasant" families of 10,000 each for a total of 20,000 families gives us a total population of 100,000 people in total.

I've adjusted some numbers and reworked the City information for ACKS:
Greyhawk, City of Domain Type: Duchy;Domain Population: 25,000 families; Greyhawk City 5,000 families ; 13,000 peasant families divided among villages and towns; Domain Alignment: Lawful; Domain Ruler: XXXXXXX, Thief 10, N; Domain Income: 22,000 gp; Stronghold Value: 115,000 gp; Market Class: II;Trade Routes: Hardby; Vassals:
In ACKS rules I'm treating the GH city like a city state and using the size of a duchy. It will have an influence of about 4 hexes (ACKS uses 24 mile hexes while GH has 30 mile but who cares.) this will help me with setting up trade and a mercantile industry should I need it. Also the market class size determines how easily sellable something is. ACKS treasure a lot of times contains goods and not just hard cash.
Just like in school with math showing how I worked it out within ACKS rules:
Folio 70,000 + total for the Greyhawk “realm” in ACKS gives 14,000 families for the realm population. This makes it a bit too small for my liking as I want it to fit as a Duchy under the ACKS realm size. So i adjust the population of families from 14,000 to 25,000. This gives a total population of people at 125,000 and fits enough with the Folio’s 70,000+.
This wil give an urban population of 2500 families, of that we take 20% of those families living in Greyhawk city proper 500 families. In ACKS terms makes the City of Greyhawk a small town. I’m treating GH as an advanced urban realm so I adjust the population density and move the population of urban families up to 7,000. This gives GH city a population of 1,400 families still just a small city in ACKS terms.
It’s still needs to be larger a centralized settlement pattern so I move down the chart two steps and increase population of GH city to 5,000 Families which gets us a class II city. Not quite what I want and this leaves 13,000 families of the original 25,000 left to spread around the Greyhawk city “realm”

So much of the economic model depends on population density, including availability of goods and services. It doesn't matter as much how much treasure you pull (except for XP implications) if there's not as much to buy with it. This reinforces the post-apocalyptic tone that some have noted for Greyhawk.

True and as I work through this it may not end being workable to fit the ACKS economic model. It maybe a case where the economic portion doesn't fit well and I just drop that for now if it ends up being more work. As a GM I'd rather not get bogged down too much in the minutiae of it at the start or just rework GH as I need to fit.

After another read through I'm going to scale back NPC levels as ACKS is based on B/X it caps out at level 14. Many of the NPC's listed are that level or higher. I probably make many of the NPC's either classless or a lot lower level to really make the PC's stand out more. I'll have to make a list of the current ones listed to give an idea of what to do. I'm trying to decide but I think I will cap NPC's at level 7 or so I'm toying with the idea of no level 9 npc's.or maybe extremely rare npc's will make that level. Possibly one cleric in Greyhawk city at least a level high enough to perform a raise dead. One thing good about ACKS is being raised isn't always a good thing. You don't always come back right

I am also going to eventually get the GH Folio in print from DrivethruRPG so it'll be easier to read than in my folder I'll be putting my initial print version in for game use. BTW what you are doing sounds good bestialwarlust.

I am assuming the Faith Requirements & Divine Classes info is largely from ACKS? Rao was originally there but he didn't make the cut. I scaled back to the original article list of deities so I gave him his two week notice . Yes the faith requirements are from ACKS the proficiencies. All characters get some general and class the requirements are just what the specific class must take on initial character creation.

As I work on the deities of Greyhawk I'm starting to flesh them out a bit. Working with some of the scant description I'll be adding my own flavor and changes working on making my Greyhawk. Here's what I have so far:
Boccob - Boccob, The Uncaring, patron of neutrality, foreknowledge, and foresight, is the Arch-mage of the Deities. He has few followers, but this does not appear to concern him in the least. Throughout the Flanaess, seers and diviners entreat him for omens, sages revere him, and those seeking to create new magical items or spells often seek his aid. Services to Boccob, when held at all, include complex rituals, incense, recitals of alchemical formulae, and readings from special works honoring knowledge. Clergy of Boccob both priest and priestess will often run research institutes instead of churches. Here they hire on a staff of sages to work on assisting with magical research for third parties (usually adventurers). Unlike a church which will not charge but ask for donations an institute run by the clergy of Boccob will have set prices for services as they have to pay for staff, rent or property tax depending on location, etc.
Celestian - It is said that Celestian and Fharlanghn are brothers who followed similar but different paths. While Fharlanghn traveled the world, Celestian was drawn to the endless reaches of the stars and the Astral Plane. Celestian, The Far Wanderer, has only a small following in the Flanaess, being revered by astronomers, astrologers, navigators, philosophers, dreamers, and others involved with the cosmos or the sky. Shrines to Celestian are located in the country, away from city lights, and are built on mountain peaks or hilltops with a clear view of the night sky. Services to Celestian are held outdoors under a starry sky.
Cuthbert - often referred to as Saint Cuthbert St. Cuthbert, the patron of common sense, truth, and forthrightness, has a large following, and many wayside shrines and small, crude chapels dedicated to his worship are scattered throughout the Flanaess. The order of the Billets is the most commonly seen. They can be found wandering among the people administering aid as they can. The clergy have the normal array of cleric weaponry however most prefer to carry a club or cudgel this is the favored weapon of Cuthbert. They work at trying the keep people vigilant against the forces of darkness and evil. The while paladin order of inquisitors will be sent out when evil needs to be rooted out with a stronger hand or to help defend the defenseless against the forces of evil and darkness. Many new inquisitor recruits are sent to battle the forces of Iuz.
Elhonna - Ehlonna of the Forests, venerated as a fertility goddess, is also patron of animals and all good folk who dwell in the woodlands. She is the deity of hunters, anglers, woodcutters, and others who make their livelihoods from the forests. Temples to Ehlonna are located in sylvan settings, although small shrines are occasionally found in villages. More females than males serve Ehlonna. Services to Ehlonna involve wooden and horn vessels, various herbs, and music from pipes and flutes.
Erythnul - is the deity of capricious malice, hate, envy, and panic. His followers include humans and humanoids as well, for Erythnul is said to greatly reward his faithful servants for their fickleness and wicked deeds.
Fharlanghn (fahr-LAHNG-n) - Dweller on the Horizon, is venerated as the deity of roads, as well as travel and distance, and his name is usually invoked throughout the Flanaess whenever a road is built or undergoes major repair. As Fharlanghn is the deity of travel, his symbol is seen on the doorways of inns and stables throughout the continent. His non-priestly followers are usually adventurers, merchants, and itinerants of all sorts. Services to Fharlanghn are conducted out of doors whenever possible, preferably under a sunny sky, and with a clear horizon in view. The clergy of Fharlagn must have mapped at least one new area once a year or help in the creation of such a map. They may not own any real property and they may not take human life, except when necessary to defend other travelers on the road or wilderness.
Heironeous - is the champion of rightful combat and chivalrous deeds. Likewise, he is the deity of those who fight for honor and strive for order and justice. The Clergy of Heironeous is made up of clerics trained in battle as well as a fighting order of paladins. The clerics of Heironeous are trained in one handed swords as well as the traditional cleric weapons the use of the sword is preferred as it is Heironeous favored weapon. Followers of Heironeous spread the teachings of Heironeous through chivalrous deeds and actions and less so through proselytizing. Both the clerics and paladins take the code if chivalry very serious.
Hextor - Champion of Evil, Herald of Hell, Scourge of Battle, is the deity of many soldiers and fighters who deem Lawful Evil most fit to rule, admiring war and discord. Of course, others besides those of military calling follow him. Especially does Hextor seek to overthrow those serving Heironeous. The latter is his half-brother and chief enemy. When Heironeous chose Lawful Good, Hextor opted to serve Lawful Evil. Always inferior to his half-brother, Hextor was granted by the Lords of Evil six arms instead of a mere pair, so as to be able to best Heironeous and all other opponents.
Incabulos - the deity of evil sendings: sickness, famine, drought, and disaster. Being a baneful deity, he does not have a large following. Nevertheless, common folk throughout the Flanaess give him offerings, usually foul-smelling, guttering black candles, trying to appease him and avoid his wrath. Despicable persons of all sorts venerate Incabulos, respecting his power and malignancy. Temples to Incabulos are hidden underground or in isolated, desolate wildernesses. Services are held in secret, with the scene dimly lit by fat, smoky, black candles. The faithful celebrate multiple iniquities, while the priests hum and chant monotonously or join the debauchery.
Istus - the Colorless and All-colored, Lady of Our Fate, is also the deity of the future, destiny, and predestination. She has few true followers, but many people throughout the Flanaess call upon her in times of want or need. Some prognosticators and seers venerate Istus. Her cult is strongest in Dyvers, the City of Greyhawk, Rauxes, Rel Mord, and Stoink · places where people tend to count on good fortune to sustain them. Services to Istus include gauze hangings, clouds of incense, woodwind music, chanting, and group meditation.
Kord - the god of physical prowess, combat and monster slaying. His followers are always physically fit and skilled combatants. They enjoy strong drink and physical challenges, especially combat. They always enjoy a good brawl. One of the ultimate goals of his followers is the defeat of a dragon in combat with little to no outside help. His followers ironically tend to look down on the use of magic, it is said that sometimes Kord will deny his followers spells in a combat forcing them to rely on their own physical prowess and skills to survive a situation.
Olidammara - , the Laughing Rogue, minstrel and miscreant, is the favorite deity of many thieves. Worshipers include bards, jesters, vagabonds, beggars, and common folk as well.
Nerull - the patron of covert activity, is known as The Reaper, Foe of All Good, Hater of Life, Bringer of Darkness, King of All Gloom, and Reaper of Flesh. He is the deity of all who embrace evil for enjoyment or gain. Many evil humans and some humanoids pay homage to Nerull. In wicked lands, such as the Great Kingdom, temples of Nerull operate openly. In other places, the rites of Nerull are conducted in subterranean shrines and sacred vaults. The worship of Nerull is done in full darkness, with a litany glorifying death and suffering. Blood sacrifices are common. Altars are made of rust-colored stone; service pieces are copper and malachite.
Pholtus - of the Blinding Light, is the deity of order, inflexibility, the sun, and the moon (Luna). Some followers of the Blinding Light claim that Pholtus set the sun and moon in the sky and maintains them in their rigid procession to show all creatures the One True Way. Such claims are not regarded as doctrine. Buildings consecrated to Pholtus are white. Services include many brightly burning candles and long sermons. The anthem of the worshipers is “Blinding Light”
Ralishaz - the Unlooked-For, is the deity of randomness and madness. Most people in the Flanaess see him as the entity responsible for unforeseen events that bring woe more often than weal. He is the patron of gamblers and those who take unusual risks; his intercession is never looked for. He has few worshipers, although a handful of small shrines and modest temples can be found in large cities and out-of-the-way places. Services to Ralishaz include random notes played on various musical instruments, babbling paeans, ffrequent castings of augury devices, and wildly varying conditions of light and darkness, noise and quiet, heat and chill.
Trithereon - is the deity of individuality and the right of self-protection. His symbol, the rune of pursuit, indicates many things, including the need to strive for liberty and to seek to bring to an end those who are bent on abridging life or freedom. The clergy many times can be found among rebels seeking to overthrow their oppressors. The itinerants, as they call themselves will help train and aid those in need. The clergy will not be found in any sort of churches or temples as they are always seeking word of these in need of aid. Wayside shrines can be found scattered through out the flanaess.
I'm still considering changing Pholtus up a bit softening the edges and dropping the inflexibility. Leaning more toward sun, creation, light. Mkae Pholtus less confrontational.

A couple of changes to Boccob and Hextor:
Boccob - Boccob, The Uncaring, patron of neutrality, foreknowledge, and foresight, is the Arch-mage of the Deities. He has few followers, but this does not appear to concern him in the least. Throughout the Flanaess, seers and diviners entreat him for omens, sages revere him, and those seeking to create new magical items or spells often seek his aid. Services to Boccob, when held at all, include complex rituals, incense, recitals of alchemical formulae, and readings from special works honoring knowledge. Temples to Boccob are more like research institutes than true churches. Usually there will be a small chapel area dedicated to Boccob but that’s it. The rest of the temple resemble more of a library and temples of Boccob libraries are unparalleled. The temple will pay for rare books and manuscripts, especially those of an occult nature. Here they hire on a staff of sages to work on assisting with magical research for third parties (usually adventurers). Unlike a church which will not charge but ask for donations an institute that is run by the clergy of Boccob will have set prices for services as they have to pay for staff, rent or property tax depending on location, etc.It is also rumored that the temples contain secret and hidden reliquaries that house ancient items of power although this has never been proven. Sometimes instead of gold a temple will take work in trade such as translating a text, working the library or whatever is deemed necessary.
Heironeous, chose to follow the path of law steadfast against chaos and evil opposing darkness with strength and valor but also tempered with mercy, kindness and generosity Hextor opted to serve a different face of law one who saw weakness as a sickness, where the strong rightfully rule the weak — fear instead of generosity, cruelty instead of mercy. Always inferior to his half-brother, Hextor was granted by the Lords of Evil six arms instead of a mere pair, so as to be able to best Heironeous and all other opponents. The followers of Hextor will attack paladins and clerics of Heironeous on sight, no mercy or quarter is given to their most hated foes.

Here's an idea I've been kicking around
Greyhawk goblins There several subspecies from the three or four foot tall common goblin, to the six foot hobgoblin to the larger still bugbear. All goblins have squat, bandy-legged builds, flat faces, pointed ears and wide mouths filed with sharp teeth. Their skin color ranges from grayish-green to dull brown and the eyes of some tend to glow with a reddish light when they are excited. Many even sprout tufts of fur. These filthy creatures are most numerous in the Pomarj where they infest the land like roaches. There are no females as these creatures are born from eggs, though that term is used loosely as they are more akin to large slimy tumors than eggs. Kept in filth — dung and other fowl substances. Once hatched they eat the egg sack they were hatched from then on any others that haven’t had the fortune to hatch yet. They mature rather quickly, within a matter of hours. These creatures are born with a racial memory that allows them to “learn” what they need. Where these eggs come from is still a mystery, but when eggs are found it’s usually in a clutch of 20 or more. These creatures have no redeeming value they are cruel and callous and delight in nothing more than murder, torture and mayhem.

<snip fun stuff for brevity> Where these eggs come from is still a mystery, but when eggs are found it’s usually in a clutch of 20 or more. These creatures have no redeeming value they are cruel and callous and delight in nothing more than murder, torture and mayhem. Why am I having Alien/Aliens flashbacks here?

A couple of updates to Cuthbert and Olidammara
Cuthbert - often referred to as Saint Cuthbert St. Cuthbert, the patron of common sense, truth, and forthrightness, has a large following, and many wayside shrines and small, crude chapels dedicated to his worship are scattered throughout the Flanaess. The order of the Billets is the most commonly seen. They can be found wandering among the people administering aid as they can. The clergy have the normal array of cleric weaponry however most prefer to carry a club or cudgel this is the favored weapon of Cuthbert. They work at trying the keep people vigilant against the forces of darkness and evil. Both the clergy and and paladins are forbidden from engaging in gambling, public drinking, or other public pursuits of pleasure. Their code requires brutal honesty, justice, and straight dealing with people. The while paladin order of inquisitors will be sent out when evil needs to be rooted out with a stronger hand or to help defend the defenseless against the forces of evil and darkness. Many new inquisitor recruits are sent to battle the forces of Iuz.
Olidammara - , the Laughing Rogue, minstrel and miscreant, is the favorite deity of many thieves. Worshipers include bards, jesters, vagabonds, beggars, and common folk as well. The clergy of Olidammara care well-loved, for their for their lightheartedness. The clergy of Olidammara have no strictures with regard to vestment, chastity, or celibacy, freedoms which they take advantage of frequently much to the derision of many other faiths. Oldimmara has no militant clergy. A priest or priestess of Olidmmara must devote at least two hours a week to frivolity.

It is a fun spin of Goblins, it reminds me of the Goblins of Hârn. i like how you are making Greyhawk your own bestialwarlust. another exalt for you, keep up the great work.

That's kind of where I got the idea, but at this point I'm not sure if I'll do this. I want to make goblins a vile and evil race of creatures. No anomalies like a good one and I wanted to eliminate the idea of cute or baby goblins. I may take a different approach, but for now I'll kick this one around.
