While Gary had envisioned Aerth as a 17th century setting, i'd like to emphasize that the Aerth presented here strongly follows the 2e AD&D HR series.
Civilization is tenous.
Man is lesser in technology, yet, greater in Art & Magick.
Prespos
Ps1.
Apply the Vikings handbook to the Norse (S) realms.
Ps2.
Apply the Celts handbook to Celtic realms.
Ps3.
Apply the Age of Rome handbook to Roman realms.
While Rome has fallen in Aerth canon, it has not quite fallen, here.
The Italic states generally represent a post-empire confederation.
Ps4.
Gunpowder weapons are extant on Aerth, just not in the Norse (S), Celtic, Greek, and Roman realms, as a general rule.
That said, remember that the Western Sea Alliance (perhaps, the equivalent of the Roman confederacy), has an advanced 20th century telecommunications system.
LEST DARKNESS FALL
Ps5.
The Abrahamic religion bassically exists in 3 Realms:
* Phillistia (Aegypt) = Jews
* Rome = Christians
* Yarbay = Muslims
The idea is that these new religions have just begun: there were strange lights in the sky.
I would imagine Abraham, Jesus, and, Mohammed being alive in the present time, on Aerth.
That said, things have Advanced: in theory, Hasur has become a battleground, with Shamash ready to be drawn into the conflict.
Yarbay is set on invading Phillistia (Aegypt): Rome(??), under Caesar Julius, new convert to Christianty, husband of Cleopatra, has intervened.
It is war.
It is The Crusade, led by Caesar Julius.
Ps6.
Note that Burgundy is ruled by Charlemagne.
