I have never Played-By-Post; but now that I am sans a group currently I'd like to my game on & I might run a game for a friend or two online. My post is advice on:
1) How does the typical PbP play out? I saw text conversations but I have to get to the combat & other tests go yet.
2) How does one run a PbP game via a forums or Google Hangout sans video, mic & earphones? Do you need a digital dice roller, go on the honor system or have the Referee roll all dice?
3) How often would be the best post rate in a regular game? If possible should it be attempted to have a schedule for real time sessions for where over an hour or so, posting in real time by all players if schedules match up?
I'd love to try a PbP here if an opening occurs in a OD&D, B/X D&D or Classic Traveller game once the current campaigns have run their course. Until then I'll follow the various PbP campaigns running to get a feel for the types of play, but I'd still like any advice to both play in or run a PbP; as you don't know how things are run behind the scenes.

Before makofan 's health went sideways and he had to step out of being the DM, IIRC he was running 12-14 on-line games across various fora and some of then had been running for as much as 8+ years. See his thread titled Running a Play-by-Post Game.

I hope to eventually join a PbP campaign here, as I've never played before - but after a bit of drama in one of the campaigns I was following to get an idea of PbP play, I did learn there are some things I'll try to do if given the opportunity to play. Be clear with your intent, try not to jump to conclusions & try to be understanding of others who I may play with. That said plan to keep up on the various campaigns, as they can help me learn how to play & eventually run my own. They seem fun to play & even with the mentioned bit of drama I still desire to try PbP.

I'd love to run a Play By Post campaign for OD&D on this site, if there is enough interest. I'd love to have you aboard, Ebon Hearted Soul.
Currently outlining some ideas for such a campaign, actually.

Sweet, docsammy if you haven't already - I'd check out the thread by Makonfan that Mighty Darci linked above in thread. It is solid advice for running a PbP game.

See his thread titled Running a Play-by-Post Game. Thanks for the heads-up, Mighty Darci! All of makofan's points were brilliant, but #8 - about the GM needing to roll all dice to keep the action moving - really stood out to me. Looking back, I'm fairly sure that all of my previous attempts to run pbp died their various deaths due to this single point. My trying to let the players roll their own dice (when this is really something over which neither player nor GM has influence) made combat drag out so much that everyone lost interest quickly.
