The dish Peng orders is peppered cavy on a bed of something that looks like wild rice. Various small red and green peppers are mixed into the rice-like dish. It is hot, very hot! The pint helps with the pain in Peng's mouth, but surprisingly it is the rice-like dish that seems to diminish the pain from the hot peppers. Peng thanks the server for his suggestion about the benefits of the rice-like dish, but still orders a second pint, just in case the effect isn't lasting. The steaks are small, the potatoes are large . . . Betting those steaks - unlike my cavy - are vat-grown for the tourist trade, rats being a lot easier to raise than cattle, on a dust ball like this. But potatoes are another matter; all they'd need for those are some airlight coldframes hooked into the CO2 scrubber lines. "Standard games, I guess." says the waiter, "Blackjack, faro, roulette, and poker...oh, and various slot machines. Nothing too exotic." "Ah, well." Peng sighs in a disappointed tone, then can't help adding, "I guess something with local color - such as, say, betting on dune buggy races - would be a bit much to expect, from a little place like this."

Cyril is having trouble getting out a stewardly "attentive, but neither seen or heard," mode. He picks a menu item he's never heard of, hoping to learn something. Cyril has never had cavy, so he orders what Peng is having. To his taste, it isn't bad. The meat is a little stringy, but it tastes a lot like pork. It could be turned into a very decent BBQed dish or stripes stir fried with vegetables would be good. The rice-like side dish, Cyril recognizes as chia mixed in with white rice. Cyril doesn't recognize all of the peppers, but he is able to pick most out from taste, appearance and heat.

"Well, sure!" the waiter says with a grin, "It's totally against company rules, but every week or two there is an impromptu buggy race somewhere on planet and bets do get placed. I've no idea when the next race will be, though, nor where."

Raven grinds the steak with strong teeth and liberally seasons the potato, shrugs to herself thinking, "I've had worse." She checks out the peppered cavy from the corner of her eye and resolves be a bit more adventurous the next time around, since that looks better than the steak.

Welcome back Mighty Darci. See, I didn't kill Raven off while you were away. Thank you, I am glad you didn't as I am rather fond of her. Of course if she dies she dies, but if so I want her to go down fighting.

Raven reflects briefly that Ha'penny never gives up, shame he doesn't apply himself or he could be twice as valuable to the crew as he thinks he is. " No Ha'penny, I have plenty as it is" she says with a very brief, very fleeting smile.

Raven looks over at Blackjack and asks, " Does your nickname have anything to do with the game? You never did say how you got it." "Yes." Blackjack says with a grin, "It's how I came to own my ship, Raven. I had a really, really, hot streak, eventually trading my winnings for Clear Sails. I haven't gambled for more than 100 credits since, figuring if I did Karma would take the ship back away from me again. I've done my gambling with Clear Sails ever since, and she's been very good to me."Turning serious he adds, "I've been thinking, lately, about the run I've had with Clear Sails and when it might be time to cash in..."

She smiles saying, "Who knows, maybe we can all retire after this trip and sell all of our shares to Ha'penny!" Looking very mischievous she says, "Just think of it Blackjack, there we'll be watching Captain Peng sailing off in the renamed ship the Pequod chasing after the unnamed Space God that cursed him!"

". . . there we'll be watching Captain Peng sailing off in the renamed ship Pequod chasing after the unnamed Space God that cursed him!" Peng joins in the laughter a bit uncertainly - What in the hells is a pequod, I wonder?? - but then protests, "Hey, now! I'm no captain, not even if I could afford it. Just give me something to shoot and I'm good."Pushing the last few grains of rice stuff around with his utensil, Peng stares at his plate as he asks Blackjack, "So you really think this job might net us all enough to buy you out?"

Raven is mightily amused at Ha'Penny's response, but not surprised. Shame really, when he has the talent to be a really good officer, but he doesn't want it and intentionally messes up enough to not be considered. On the other hand, Raven can easily see him playing Captain Ahab.

Peng glances sharply at Raven - I can't tell if those crinkles in the corners of her eyes mean that she's laughing at me or not - but doesn't actually say anything, venturing only a lop-sided smile and a tiny shrug if she returns his glance.

Silva snorts in appreciation of Raven's jibe, then answers her question with, "Oh, I was young and male, which means I was also stupid. With visions of looking all spiffy in a Class A uniform at the next dance, I volunteered."Silva pauses to down a swig of beer, then adds, "The reality was about as far from 'spiffy' as you could get."

Glancing down at his shore-going rig - his best duds yet still wrinkled and not overly clean - Silva shrugs and replies, "Yeah, the War pretty much beat all the 'spiffy' out of this fella."
Stacking his empty dishes and pushing them aside, Silva looks around at his companions and asks, "So . . . anyone up for desert or should we hit up the gaming tables?"

(Oh, I see my typo now, I also see I was not the only one that misspelled it. ) I t doesn't take all that long for the party to walk the kilometer, even if it is uphill all the way. At least, it'll be downhill on the way back.
