Gory Flory speaks in reply to Zipper, "I'm with ZU-ZU!! on this one, go ahead and make the offer, we need to sort this out and they seem like the kind that might follow behind and wait for the worse possible time for us to attack." Then, "Everyone be ready if this goes sideways."

Mensa: "Sides ways. Right." (turns sideways and begins counting pirates as he can see) "1, 3, eleventy-twelve, 2. Two - we outnumber them, fellas."

Zipper sighs and responds to the pirates, trying to feel them out a bit more, “It sounds like you’re servants. Thought you’d be men after my own heart.” . . . “Maybe you should work with us instead. Any of you?”

The referee rolls a reaction check noting that 1. Zipper is a thief of the same alignmnet 2. Zippers charisma is 10 3. No treasure was offered 4. The parties involved are of equal size

Zipper’s hand tenses on his bow. “I’m so gonna die,” he mutters to himself, as he looks to the others for a nod to let loose, or else some other signal.

Zipper’s hand tenses on his bow. “I’m so gonna die,” he mutters to himself, as he looks to the others for a nod to let loose, or else some other signal. Gory Flory says quietly to Zipper, " At the first step this way, loose that arrow, then drop back for Mensa to come forward." To the scurvy pirate crew she yells, " What ye, had better do maties is back off before you bite off more than you can chew!!"
Then quieter again, "OK guys stand your ground. Mensa, when Zipper drops back move up to his spot and have your chopper ready." OOC: Is Zipper tall enough to shoot over either of the dwarflings?

OOC: Is Zipper tall enough to shoot over either of the dwarflings? Don’t think I can fire into the melee once it starts. If the pirates rush in, I can maybe hide in the shadows, surprise one of ’em. If they don't, maybe I can go unnoticed to position myself behind ’em.EDIT/OOC: The Red Baron, I'm assuming Zipper’s belted dagger counts as "hanging free" and can be drawn and used in same round if need be. Let me know if you want to rule differently.

I recall the ad&d dmg sample dungeon allowing a human fighting man to shoot over the head of a dwarf or something like that, so I'll allow it as long as he isn't shooting at anything small.

The referee rolls reaction (2d6=4). The pirates don't take kindly to being threatened by a band of lasses and halflings. "Get 'em" roars the talkative pirate, and they draw their cutlases.
The pirates are just of of melee range so pass through fire is permitted. The referee resolves all spells and missiles before combat closes. Zuzu speaks the excellent prismatic spray. The first pirate fails his saving throw (1d20=11) and streaming darts of liquid fire lash out from the magic-user's hand, tearing the pirate in a thousand places for (1d6=3) damage. Zipper looses a missile (mensa won't be able to from the second rank), which skitters harmlessly down the corridor (1d20=6).
The pirates close for melee and attack first (initiative: party 2, pirates 3). Referee dices attack rolls (2d20=5,20) and rolls for the target (1-3 yulgit, 4-6 zipper: 1d6=3). Yulgit takes (1d6=6) damage and is cut down by a saber, instantly killing him. Zipper draws his knife and retaliates (1d20 = 14, 1d6=5), and punches his dirk through the injured pirates neck.
The melee continues (party 6, pirates 1). Mensa enters the first rank to strike with his axe, and zipper fights on (2d20 = 15,20; 2d6 = 3,6). Both attacks hit pirate number three, and he goes down in a bloody mess. Pirate 2 strikes back (1d20 = 13, 1d6 = 2), and zipper takes a hard punch to the nose.
The fight rages on (party 2, pirates 4). Pirate four advances to take the place of pirate three, and they press the attack (2d20=1,8). Mensa and Zipper retaliate (2d20 = 2,3). Blows are exchanged but both sides are winded and bloody with casualties all around.
What are you orders?

OOC: Before I issue orders I believe I stated that we were three abreast on the front line if there was room and I believe that you have the pirates three abreast if I am reading it right. If so where are my attacks in the first round and I also had a chance of being hit (I am chainmail and shield).

If so where are my attacks in the first round and I also had a chance of being hit (I am chainmail and shield). There is not sufficient space to fight three abreast, especially with dead bodies piled about. Three men might be able to fit in a corridor if they carried knifes or spears. Three dwarfs or goblins might be be able to fight abreast. Likewise, a man with a two handed sword or a polearm might be able to hold an entire passage alone, preventing anyone from getting by. Otherwise two may fight abreast in a 10' passage. If you wish to swap places with zipper or barholmes, then i will need both you and that player to declare that is their intent.

We will continue to press the attack with fury, however, if they retreat a few steps and break off combat we will wait at the ready. If the movement of combat allows me to move up and flank either Zipper or Mensa's opponent I will do so and attack. Also If either goes down I will immediately move up and attack.

Zipper had hoped his fast hands would be more of an advantage, helping him strike the first blow. Then again, he never figured on fighting in the front line for this bunch of semi-strangers. So gonna die, he thinks, probably for the last time, as he slashes and spins, continuing to attack with a fluidity reminiscent of the Dance of the Fourteen Silken Movements.

EDIT: Sorry, just read Mighty Darcy's post -- I am fine with whatever. I was thinking that Vile has dropped out, and if that's true, then the results of the combat weren't really too bad for the party.

Ok everything plays the same up to the melee.
The referee determines that pirates have a dexterity score of 10, indicating that zipper and yulgit have the first strike! The referee rolls the attacks (2d20=13,15; 2d6=6,6, target 2d6 = 3,6). With lightning speed, Zipper drops his bow and pulls his knife just in time stick the first pirate in the guts. As the first pirate comes limping behind smarting from the spell, Yulgit kneecaps him and the pirate collapses. Two more pirates file in behind and attack (2d20=5,20, I think I rolled those same two numbers last time too. Damage 1d6=2, target 1d6=4) The third pirate is upon zipper and deals him a solid punch to the nose (deja vu?).
The melee continues. (2d20=20,17; damage 2d6=5,2; target (2d6=1,1): Yulgit and Zipper gang up on the third pirate and he is quickly cut down. The fourth pirate retaliates (1d20=17,damage 1d6=4, target 1d6=2), giving the dwarf a deep cut in the side.
The pirates have lost half their number and check morale (2d6=5). With a string of curses, the two remaining pirates take to their heels.
I suppose that turned out a bit better for you all... no dead dwarfs this time!

The three dead pirates have ragged pants, striped shirts, sabers, eye patches, peg legs, and bandanas.
By the time the party catches its breath, it is exploration turn 4. You have 120' of movement left this turn. A corridor runs in fornt of you towards the crossroads, behind you, and a side-passage leads off to to the door the party was attempting to open

Gory Flory says, "ZU-ZU!! stand watch for us while I clean and bandage that wound of Yuglit's." She carefully pours a little wine on the wound. "It doesn't appear too deep and should be OK," she tells him. "Mensa please come help Zipper with these bodies, let's pile them against the door and leave them there." Then "Let's continue on and leave this door for now and proceed as we were following the all the right turns as far as we can go that way."
Zipper searched all of the bodies, did he find anything besides what you mentioned? Any supplies or coin or daggers?
