I hope it's alright for me to create this thread. I figured we needed a way to discuss the current scene without loading it up with OOG comments that really have nothing much to do with the action. In that line: I would like to complement Mighty Darci for picking up on Peng's personality so well! I look forward to a series of creative put-downs from Raven to Peng, in the developing scene!

Sure, thing! I was going to have an OOG thread, but I got side tracked with other things and hadn't set it up yet. Yes, I still have to post the key to the ship deck plans. I'm behind on that, too. But, yes, let's keep our out of game chatter in here and out of the In Game thread. I''m getting a kick out of Raven and Peng's interplay.

I hoped that you might, I saw his character build and thought this was too good to pass up.

Sorry for the delay. Busy times at work. I let Wade be late too in order not to disturb the flow.

Alright everyone, this is an announcement of epic proportions! Based on this thread (000) Nagata, Patagonia: Getting Organized this new pbp game just went on my must read list. I don't have time to run around liking a lot of posts, but be assured I will be watching, reading and enjoying.

Sorry. Really got hammered with work and family stuff yesterday. But it's okay. Peng rarely puts himself forward, except in his particular area of expertise (e.g. shooting various things). Or when there is a desirable female involved.

Job is motel front desk, five to six days a week (depending upon who doesn't show up for work). Never married, but I have an elderly mother and three younger siblings (all of them with various combinations of ex-partners, current partners and gradations of offspring). Currently, I'm living in my brother's house with him and my mother, neither of them in very good health; brother has asbestosis and numerous related problems, mother is frail and currently recovering from a badly-broken leg. I'm essentially their live-in nurse and general dogsbody.

I've been married almost 10 years (we will celebrate our 10th anniversary in August), have two daughters (3 yrs, and 17 months) and an aging (13 yrs) miniature dachshund. I'm a software engineer working for Red Hat these days, I'm maintainer of the NFS Ganesha user space NFS server open source project. I've been gaming since 1977. Frank

Referencing the current scene: I (the player) was figuring that our characters tended to concentrate on their areas of best expertise. In Blackjack's case, his Engineer-3 should have him standing by to perform damage control, when things get tight. He's actually a better Engineer than the character rated for that job (who has Engineer-2). Putting him in a turret seems a waste.

I am 20, 21 in the fall. I am working in an office right now and my parents told me that they are perfectly happy to help with college, but based on their own experiences they recommended that I do the same thing my brothers did, work a few years, experience the real world, grow up some more and then go to college with a definite plan and goal in mind. With the additional experience you will get more out of college and are less likely to get derailed. I started in fast food back in high school and then moved on to office work after high school. I am looking at going to college for a business management and psychology double major with a lot of science, math and history. When I start college, because of college courses in high school I already have a lot of college hours and am technically a junior. I am also looking to also take a long hard look at what would be required to start my own business after college, likely after working a few years first.
I am buying hardly anything right now and I am saving every penny I can. The first two years out of high school (I graduated at 17) I worked every hour I could, again at my parents suggestion. Work 80 hours a week and understand that many people work that way for years on end just to survive. They work sick and they work hurt. (my second and third jobs were in small stores, more fast food and similar jobs)
My parents aren't charging me rent because they see almost everything going into savings, although I chip in toward food and I do chores around the house, even when I worked the really long hours.

You sound like you've got your head on remarkedly straight. I wish I had taken your course, but I just never had the drive. I guess I'm sorta like Peng that way! One thing you might consider which I did not think of until I was already out of college: Instead of paying rent (either on or off campus), look into BUYING A HOUSE (or condo) wherever you decide to go to school, with your parents as co-signers. The mortgage payment is very unlikely to be much (if any) higher than the rent you would pay for an equivalent property. In addition, if you can swing a multi-bedroom property, then you can rent out the extra bedrooms and more than cover your costs. Once you graduate, you can sell the property again for at least its purchase price. In short, free college housing!

I never doubted my parent's wisdom, I guess that makes me odd, but I like odd. Thanks for the advice, I will bounce that idea off of my parents. There may be some women I know that would be happy to live in a house that I own, people I have history with. I will look into it.

Frank, do you have a track setup for your trains all the time? How extensive is your model railroading?

Frank, do you have a track setup for your trains all the time? How extensive is your model railroading? These days my model railroading is limited to the armchair (actually the bed... I subscribe to Model Railroader and Garden Railways magazines) or setting up the LEGO Christmas Train at Christmas. My Christmas layout is a semi-permanent LEGO layout (semi-permanent in that it's LEGO, there's no glue, and I try to add to it every year) with a complete LEGO terrain base. It's designed to fit around our Christmas tree (which required re-work in 2015 because we got a new stand, and again in 2016 because somehow the stand position changed somewhat, I think now I can reliably set it up again, and I have pictures to help with alignment). Our tree is placed on an old dining room table my wife's grandparents had cut the legs down to coffee table height, and the LEGO display is shaped to fit on top of the table (the LEGO display has some resemblance to roundness, though there are now some cantilevered bits to allow for some of the additions). One picture of the Christmas train layoutMore pictures (now available)I was in the process of building an HO model railroad in my apartment back in the mid-90s, but I lost steam, then I got involved in LEGO and I had a functional LEGO layout set up on the table for a year or so before my LEGO collection started to take over the apartment, unfortunately I think any pictures I might have from that time are pre-digital camera. I also made purchases in 2005 to start a garden railroad, but never even broke ground. When the kids are a bit older, some of the garden railroad trains will get set up on the floor around the Christmas tree. Here are pics from Christmas 2010 (pre-kid) showing the LEGO and garden trains That also happens to be the first year of the landscaped Christmas layout. You can see the old Christmas tree stand in some of the pictures.

Marvelous! I had a basic HO layout - and positively loved to build/wreck fleets of LEGO ironclads - when I was about 9-10, but never anything even vaguely close to that cool.

Ummmm . . . Chuck? Your most recent post to the action thread has your PC responding to what I am reasonably certain was a private thought (rather than a verbal statement) of Raven.
I always put my PC's private thoughts in italics, the better to avoid exactly this sort of confusion. But that's just my personal choice. I have learned to my cost that many PbP players tend to have insufficient time to properly consider each post before replying.

Hey, no worries, as I posted elsewhere, I wasn't sure whether or not the musing was internal or sotto voce to yourself (that might have been overheard). I will try to err towards caution in the future. :-)

Deck Plan Key Is Up
I've finally gotten the key to the deck plans up in The Library. Two of the staterooms have been converted to a sickbay and a galley/pantry/ship's locker. One stateroom has been designated as belonging to the Captain and a luxury stateroom for the owner aboard (Blackjack Miller). Lois Cho will get another of the luxury staterooms, Cathy Jokivic gets a stateroom and the other two NPC assistants will share the other luxury stateroom. That leaves 6 staterooms for the rest of you to divide up among you. EDIT: We can float Cathy Jokivic to a different stateroom if one of you wants 22.- Thazar De Vrass
- Sir Baltus van Rijn
- Doctor Wade Vargas
- Peng Silva
- Cyril Asinner
- Gilroy McGonagall
13. Captain Raven Firestorm 14. 15. 16. 17. Sickbay 19. 20 21. 22. Cathy Jokavic 23. Galley/Pantry/Ship's Locker 24. Blackjack Miller 25. Chief Factor Cho 26. Ben Dean, John Ting

Peng would probably be a very frustrating person to room with, since I imagine that his bunk would tend to resemble the bed of Oscar (from the Odd Couple) . . . except when Peng thought he might actually be bringing in a female, when it would get "cleaned" through the expedient of bundling everything into the nearest hiding spot (such as his roommate's closet) then "finding" some clean linens for it . . . somewhere.
But if the crew allows it, Peng would prefer to spend most of his time in his "ready room," only visiting his official stateroom to shower (usually when ordered to do so . . . ) 😎

Peng's "ready room" already exists as a space. It's the airlock that gives access to the turret that Peng mans (e.g. the only one the Clear Sails mounted until very recently). The relatively low value which Peng places on hygiene should actually encourage the rest of the crew to give him sole use of this space. Out of sight smell, out of mind! NOTE: I'm assuming that we're using CT ship interiors. By which I mean, airlock hatches are manual contraptions. Although they each have an indicator to tell the bridge whether they're open or closed, hatches can't be operated except by turning their dogging wheels while standing at each hatch. Peng wouldn't want to suddenly have his "ready room" evacuated to space via remote control . . .

NOTE: I just realized that I have modeled at least some features of Peng on the character known as Dogbreath, from Christopher Buckley's "Steaming to Bamboola: The World of a Tramp Freighter." If you haven't read this book (and you can find it, as it's been out of print for years), I highly recommend it. It's short, but very well written and absolutely chock full of hysterical/horrific bits which can be plopped down into Traveller without a ripple.

I'm okay to room with anyone. Gilroy is not obsessively neat, but he tends towards being somewhat orderly. ;-)
