You emerge into Miscatoon space about 1.2 million km from the planet. You quickly engage your sensors, and the only ship within range is a distant scout ship on a trajectory to leave the system, although it has not begun its jump process yet

"What is the protocol in these situations?" Sir John Corrigan asks. "I mean, are we obliged to make our presence known, get landing instructions, that sort of thing? Or can we just pick a landing site and go for it?"

OOC: I will let the others weigh in, but, as in anything, it varies. You could be friendly, official, or sneaky, as you choose. Doubtless MISC thinks it owns the whole planet, even though it is mostly uncharted and only populated at the south pole

I'm trying to remember what we planned on looking for here...
Per the description in the Space 1977 forum, if we want to stealth land, we should be able to do so.

Let's be as stealthy as possible and come from the north end of the planet, fill up our tanks in the ocean just out of sight of land nearest the point of reference that I have and then proceed to scout the location of our goal, making use of the sensors that we have.

Do you have a goal?

|
Post by Mighty Darci on Jan 3, 2017 17:09:53 GMT -5
We have the broad goal of seeking out resources and advantages. Our current goal is seeking some rare minerals in the equatorial jungle of Miscatoon. I have a map of questionable reliability but better than nothing (one hopes). After filling our tanks we are bound for an area at about 1 degree north, 212 degrees east. Likely the northwest end of the hex that location describes.

Ahh, I think you neglected to mention that map to the others

Ahh, I think you neglected to mention that map to the others I learned in the scout service that telling everything you know before that information becomes relevant is not wise. At this time it is relevant. As the old saying goes, "loose lips, sink ships".

"Okay, so stealth insertion?" Corrigan says. "Sounds good. In that jungle, it'd take a bit for them to find us."

I spread out the map so that everyone can take a look at where we are going.

The information that I have indicates that dysprosium is found in many minerals, including xenotime, fergusonite, gadolinite, euxenite, polycrase, blomstrandine, monazite and bastnäsite; primarily with yttrium and often with erbium and holmium or other rare earth elements. Dysprosium is obtained primarily from monazite sand, a mixture of various phosphates. The ship library has more information.

Marci is an old hand at this game, ignores the departing scout ship, and plots a self-insertion away from the star base, and shuts down her transponder, engines, grav compensator and everything else except life support, and drifts towards the planet, slowly picking up speed as her initial fast burn and the planet's gravity start to take effect. It will be a nail-biting 12 hour splash down.

Marci suggests everyone catch some sleep before the ride gets bumpy, it will be a few hours before it starts to get really exciting and sleep will be the last thing on everyone's minds. As everyone else settles down to get a bit of sleep Marci gazes out at the stars as the planet's gravity gradually takes a stronger hold on the little ship. As she keeps an eye on things she wonders what other minerals, metals or gems might be found with the dysprosium. Little is known about Miscatoon and she wonders if gold, silver, platinum and the other noble metals are found in deposits, as they are used in many applications in manufacturing. She likes the quiet when the others are all asleep. Soon her full attention will be focused on landing safely. Who knows what the day will bring, but the smell of adventure is in the air. She has not felt this young in years and is glad to be back in harness and useful again.

As Marci dives into the atmosphere, she fires up all the systems and turns on the retros to slow her down. She hits the water at about 100 km/h at the perfect angle, and submerges to start teh refuel process. They will be vulnerable for about half an hour

Right now is when we do not want to be observed, but we should be good unless someone knows where to look. That attack when we left Penzance was too much of a coincidence. Lady Marie have you decided who will be in the landing party and who will watch the ship once we locate where we want to land?

I think our landing party should be Sir John, Abigail, yourself if you desire, and myself. Adele and Lui can keep watch on the ship with Adele manning comms and scanners and Lui at the helm to expedite departure should we need an expedited departure (there should be sufficient controls on the bridge to monitor engineering since the Wayward Sun is designed to be operated by a single person).

I will prep my laser carbine and auto pistol, spare clips for both, knives, machete for clearing brush, some rations, water etc. i will stick very close to Lady Leroux

Sir John will check over his weapons, like he always does, and he well set up his perimeter screen before leaving the ship. He'll show someone how to use it; also, I assume there is a remote of some sort he can take with him, so he can return to the ship himself without setting it off.

I'll show everybody how to use it. The more the better. Lack of awareness can kill.

Question - are you going to head for your map location by daytime or nighttime?

Lady Leroux, should we leave for our projected landing point at dawn or at dusk?

Basically, entire journey in your scout ship to rough area will take only about an hour. There are obvious pros and cons of covertly exploring a planet by day and night, so I will let you decide.

I would suggest a flyover a couple of hours before daylight with the running lights off and scan for life forms in the area and if all clear or only wildlife, go ahead and look for a landing spot and do so. If there are people in the area, then we can discuss our options and approach.

Lady Leroux, should we leave for our projected landing point at dawn or at dusk? Does Marie have access to any library information she could interpret with her hunting knowledge? Also are there any satellites? Other than surveillance satellites my impression is we are unlikely to be observed.

You'll be flying over mostly jungle, although the area on the map is probably forested volcano peaks. You are highly unlikely to be spotted by satellite or government

I would suggest we go with my previous suggestion unless someone has another suggestion. A flyover scan for life forms to see if anyone is in the area and then land and get started.
