Hey, The Red Baron, Admin Pete, and other interested parties: Could y'all help me with some cultural knowledge and lists? I am having the toughest time compiling the following for myself from the inter-webs. I'd like to know the rough name (or a roughly usable name) for some of the following titles more familiar to us in western culture, and the unit they rule or govern. So, e.g.: Political: 1. Emperor (where different from king) / empire 2. King / kingdom Prince / Principality 3. Duke / Duchy Marquis / March Earl / County 4. Baron / Manor Religious: 1. Patriarch / Patriarchate 2. Archbishop / Archdiocese Bishop / Diocese 3. Vicar or Rector / Parish 4. Deacon Monastic: 1. Master General / Order 2. Abbot, Abbess / Monastery 3. Prior, Prioress / "Satellite," monastery 4. Brother, Sister I would like rough equivalents across many cultures, e.g.: Persian (Pre-Islamic) Babylonian Egyptian Muslim Greek Roman Arabian (Pre-Islamic, if applicable) Indian Chinese Japanese Mongolian Tibetan Nubian Aztec Mayan Incan Some of these may have overlap. I'm just trying to be thorough. Some may not have a one to one match across all the above categories. And I don't need perfect historical matches. Just stuff reasonably believable and usably abstract enough for a fantastic medieval wargames campaign!

DMG section on how to run campaigns has a list of comparable titles across different cultures Rad. I am so OD&D I often forget to check AD&D resources. I'll have to pull them down off of a very high shelf somewhere! Do you know a page number by any chance?

I just looked this up and reference it in one of the Bath threads. Hold on: 1e DMG starting on p. 88 labelled "SOCIAL CLASS AND RANK IN ADVANCED DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS"

jmccann, The Red Baron thanks for the tips and reminders. I've started compiling a big table lengthwise across a legal sheet. I was a little disappointed in the relative paucity of the DMG. Tony Bath helped to fill some in. Both helped me to find stuff in a better way on the inter-webs and through wikipedia.
